Three fingers from two pairs of hands show fine line script tattoos reading promise, each with a small coloured heart, on the hand.

Promise script with hearts on fingers

Lettering · Hand · Mixed · Photo

Three fingers, held together, each carry the word promise in thin, cursive script. A small heart sits at the start of each word, coloured teal, pink and purple against the black linework. The hands are photographed outdoors against green grass in warm, natural light.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Now sit down, the pair of you, the 4.15 is running late as it always does, and I've got nothing but time and a flask. Three girls came onto this platform one March, Edie Thwaite, Marnie Sowerby and a quiet one called Ruth, and they sat on the bench where you're sitting with a biro passed between them.

They'd been put on the same train to Leeds for a school trip and swore on that bench they'd never let anything come between them. Edie wanted it written down. So Marnie wrote the word along the back of her own hand, and the other two copied it onto their fingers in that looping hand girls used then, one after the other. Ruth had a teal crayon from the lost property tin, Edie a pink one, Marnie a violet, and each drew a small heart at the start of the word, pressing hard so it wouldn't smudge.

The train came. Ruth got on it, and the other two stood on the platform waving at a window that didn't wave back. The ink faded inside a week, the way biro does, and the hearts went grey with washing. Nobody told them that was the end of it, and nobody told them it wasn't.

Forty years on, I saw Edie on this same bench with a woman who had a violet heart on her finger, and it was inked properly now, not biro. They didn't say much. They just held their fingers up together, the way kids do when they've made up, and I thought the words had gone a long time back, but the hearts were still there, bright as the day they were coloured in.
