Purple bellflower stem on upper back
Fine line · Back · Colour · Photo
A small botanical design of two purple bellflower buds on a slender green stem runs vertically down the upper back, just below the nape of the neck. The linework is delicate and thin, with soft shading on the petals and a few tiny leaf-like strokes along the stem. The image is shown as a before and after style pair, with the subject's short dark hair and a black top strap visible, and the tattoo is the clear focus against the plain skin.

The bellflowers on the upper slope had not rung for three summers, and everyone in Wenlow Dale said it was because the Corrie family had broken their word to the hill. So when Tamsin Corrie walked up the old drove road on the morning of her wedding, a thin stem of purple bells tucked in her apron pocket, her aunts pretended not to watch her go.

The promise was simple. Each spring a bride cut one bud from the wild stem and carried it to the church, and the hill kept the rest of the bells ringing for the year. Tamsin's grandmother had broken it by taking the whole plant for a dye pot. Tamsin knelt in the wet grass beneath a rowan and found the stem tangled in the bracken, with only two buds left on it, one bowed low and one still closed as tight as a fist.
She did not cut them. She tied the stem to a hazel switch with a length of the red thread her mother had spun, set a heel of bread and a cup of milk on the flat stone, and walked back down with empty hands. The thread trailed behind her all the way to the lane like a long green line.
At the church door the chapel bell rang once, though nobody had pulled the rope. Her aunts looked at one another. Tamsin only smiled, because the hill had a good memory and the thread had told it exactly who was asking. That autumn the wild stem came back up the slope, two buds to a stalk, and it has never been cut since.
