Dear Tom, the sea was flat as a plate when we cleared the Humber this morning, and Skipper Ruddock has been muttering about the glass since breakfast. You asked in your last letter whether the lads at the ice house still play cards for buttons. They do, though Jimmy lost his good coat to Pike on Tuesday and now wears his mother's cardigan, which nobody has the nerve to mention.

You also wanted to know why I never write about the girl at the chandler's on Fish Dock Road. Did she laugh at me or with me? I still can't say. She gave me a pencil stub and told me to sketch the trawlers so I'd stop staring at the water. I did, badly, and she said the boats looked like they were apologising for something. Was that a compliment? I've been turning it over for a fortnight.

Hauling was poor this trip. Forty boxes of cod in three days, and the ground off Dogger seems emptied out. Ruddock says the fish have gone looking for cooler water, and I asked him why we couldn't follow them. He didn't answer. He just tapped the chart with his pipe and looked at the sky, which is how he answers most things.

So here is my question for you, and I'll ask it plainly. When I come home in March, will you still be at the net loft, or will you have gone off to Hull as you keep threatening? Write back soon. The post boat leaves Tuesday, and I've left the full stop off the end of this page, since I'm not sure yet what I'm telling you.

Yours, Walt
