Quote and elephants on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows the words 'You were meant for amazing things' in upright sans-serif capitals, with an adult elephant and a smaller calf below. The elephant has a semicolon printed on its body, and both animals are drawn with simple, even black outlines and no shading. The design is in black ink only and sits on pale skin against a light background.

The sign over Dilys Trewin's door had been losing its paint since the winter, and she sent you up the ladder with a tin of enamel and a hog-hair brush the width of a thumb. 'Paint the letters you can see,' she said, 'and leave the rest to the weather.' You were seventeen and sure that a sign ought to say something finished, so you asked her what the shop was called, and she laughed at you from the quay.

Down on the slipway the fishing boats were coming in low with their catch, and the gulls were making a racket over the fish boxes. Dilys kept a tray of old printers' type in the back room, and every few weeks she would hand you a piece and ask where it belonged. Today it was a small black semicolon, worn smooth as a pebble. 'Stops a sentence without ending it,' she said. 'Think on that before you go handing out full stops.'
You painted the mark on the side of an elephant you had chalked on the wall beside the door, because the harbour children had been drawing elephants all week after a circus lorry broke down on the hill. The calf you added last, trotting behind with its trunk tucked toward its mother's tail. When Dilys came out with her tea she looked at it a long while, then at you, and said nothing about spelling. She simply went back in and left the door open, the way you leave a thing when you mean it to stay unfinished.
