Quote and smiling flame on the ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a black cursive script quote reading "They say that the best blaze brightest when circumstances are at their worst", with a red and orange flame figure on the left that has round eyes and a smile. Small fuzzy black soot shapes sit beside the text. The lettering uses clean, even linework, while the flame is softly shaded with blended red and orange tones, and the photo shows it on the side of a torso above a denim waistband.

Her gran always said the fire in there was a contrary thing that only woke for people who asked nicely.

Nothing caught. Then, from the black throat of the flue, soot came down in soft grey tufts, little furred creatures with bright eyes that tumbled over the iron lip and gathered in the grate like dust bunnies with opinions. They sorted the kindling for her, one stick at a time, and stacked it the way Gran liked it. Behind them the flame rose, round-faced and grinning, and the first lick of orange ran up the apple wood.
By dusk the press was steaming and the pickers were drinking hot cider on the lane wall. Nell sat on the step with soot on her knuckles, thinking about how the worst week of the year had been the one she'd been surest of losing. The sprites had gone back up the chimney without a word of thanks. Through the open door the fire kept grinning at her, as though it had known all along that the orchard would be fine.
