Snow had closed the pass by mid-afternoon, and the Hollin Fell inn had taken in six strangers and a goat. Marta Vell sat at the foot of the back stairs with a cup of barley water going cold in her hands, listening to her brother Tobiah argue with the innkeeper about the cellar door. He was twelve and had not stopped counting since the coach failed. Forty-one steps to the yard. Nineteen bales of hay. Three ways out, he said, and only one of them was not a lie.

She had cut the sign into the lintel above the cellar stair years ago, when they still believed in such things: a triangle, a circle inside it, and a single upright line running through the circle's heart. Their grandmother had called it the three gifts. Marta had never settled whether the gifts were a cloak, a stone or a road home, and had decided it did not matter, so long as somebody kept a hand on the other person's sleeve.

Near midnight the lamp guttered and Tobiah came up the stairs white-faced, saying the ice had found the back door. Marta pulled him down beside the fire and took his cold wrist. "I am not worried, Tobiah," she said, in the flat voice their mother used for lies that were meant kindly. He looked at her for a long time. Then he asked if she would still be there when the door gave, and she told him again, slower, that she was with him, and that the stair was built to hold.

By morning the drifts had reached the sill and the sky was the colour of pewter. Tobiah slept against her shoulder with his boots still laced. Marta watched the door, and let the snow take its time.
