Floral ankle and foot design in black
Botanical · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A bare ankle and foot with a black floral design of flowers, scrolling vines, leaves and small dots that runs from the ankle across the top of the foot. The bold linework is filled in solid black with ornamental swirl shapes. A pool, a lifebuoy and foliage blur in the background, and the warm skin tones contrast with the dark ink.

The road south of Tessel Wells ran so straight that a boy could watch his own dust for a whole morning. Nobody in the town liked to walk it alone, so each spring the keepers of the well painted the travellers' feet with black paste ground from walnut husks and lamp soot, because their grandmothers had said a road remembers what it is shown.

Samir was seventeen the year he refused the paste. He wanted to go to the coast with the salt caravan, and he laughed as the old woman Mona knelt in the dust and drew a flower across the top of his foot, then a leaf, then a curl like a fern opening. She pressed the dots in with a thorn. "Walk slowly," she said, "and the vines will tell you where the water is."
He walked all afternoon with the sun pressing on his neck and nothing to see but heat. Where the dust thinned, though, he found small black flowers pressed into the stones, and where the stones gave way to hard ground, a faint scroll ran ahead of him like a path. Each time he stopped, the marks stopped too. When the wind came up and filled his footprints, the flowers were still there, each one a little ahead of him.
At dusk he reached the coast and found the caravan gone. Mona's paste had dried on his skin and would not wash off, and when the salt merchants asked how he had crossed alone, he only pointed at his foot. He never went to the coast again. He kept the well instead, and when the young ones asked why he walked so slowly, he told them the road was only following his feet, and his feet were following the flowers.
