You learn the cut by its wake before you learn anything else. Uncle Tomasz never says so. He simply hands you the tiller at six in the morning on the Wendle, then walks forward along the roof with his bad knee complaining, and leaves you to find out what the water remembers. A narrowboat going steady throws a long, lazy curve behind her, swinging out toward the reeds and easing back, and if you hold her true the curve stays clean until it reaches the bank and softens into nothing.

The trouble starts at the swing bridge below Hatherton. The cut narrows, a moorhen bolts from the towpath, and you jerk the tiller before you have decided to. Halcyon Dee skews, the wake snaps sideways into a hard little hook, and for a moment the water looks as though it has written a question in the wrong hand. Tomasz sees it from the bow and says nothing at all, which is worse than shouting. He has spent forty years on this water and has never once asked it for an apology.

By evening the boat is tied up under the willows and the buyer from Rugby has been and gone, shaking his head at the rust. You sit on the gunwale with a mug going cold. Tomasz lifts a finger toward the canal, where the afternoon's wake has flattened to a single thread of light. Only one curve survives out there, bending the right way and then letting go. "That one's yours," he says, and goes below to put the kettle on.
