Skull tattoo on foot in pointe shoe

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A dancer stands en pointe in satin ballet shoes against a pale wall and grey floor. A black and grey skull with shaded detailing and ornamental elements sits on the top of one foot, and a partly visible tattoo with floral or vine-like linework appears on the lower leg above the shoe. The monochrome composition is framed low, with the reflection of the feet visible on the floor.

The shoe came back to the wardrobe room on a Monday, wrapped in last week's newspaper, with a note that said only *the skull is not for the audience*. Maud Penhaligon turned it under the sewing lamp. Someone had inked a small skull on the satin with a fine nib and shaded it in grey, then sewn the ribbon over the top so tightly that the pattern puckered like a rumpled sleeve.

She tried spirit first, then a cold tea rinse, then a dab of the cleaning fluid the costume house in Leeds swore by. The ink would not lift. Where the water touched, the skull only came up sharper. The satin was the last of a dye lot from Milan that nobody made any more, so she could not simply cut the panel out and replace it. Every Thursday the dancer came in, stood at the rail while Maud fitted the ribbons, and asked her not to look too hard at it.

One night, after the stalls had emptied and the cleaners had gone, Maud found the skull had shifted. Its jaw hung open now, as if it had been about to say something and thought better of it. She sat with the shoe in her lap until the lamp began to hum. The note, she decided, had never been a warning. The skull had been painted for someone who was no longer going to dance, and it wanted to be let onto the boards.

She wiped the stage at dawn, as she always did before the lights came up. The boards were wet and dark. In the shine, two pale shoes stood on their own reflections, and beneath the left one a grey skull kept its place, watching the floor for the next step.
