Quote tattoo across the top of a foot
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot rests on sand with a line of black lettering tattooed across the top, reading "I swear we were infinite...". The letters are in a casual, hand-drawn style with slightly uneven strokes, and the ink has a soft, slightly faded look. The warm skin tone and pale sand fill the frame, with the foot angled diagonally and the toes at the upper right.

Dear Tom, The marquee is down and the fairy lights have gone back in their boxes, but there is still sand in every seam of my dress. Your mother says it will come out in the wash. I told her it won't, not from the hem, and she gave me the look she saves for guests who make a scene during the speeches.

You asked me on the sea wall last March whether I thought we'd made a mistake. I said no, and I meant it, though I didn't say what I'd been thinking, which was that everything about us felt like it would go on for ever. That night we wrote a line on the back of a pub quiz sheet as a joke: "I swear we were infinite..." You said the dots were doing a lot of work.
Today at the cove, while the band packed up, I walked to the rocks and sat where the tide had left a smooth stretch of sand. I wrote the sentence with my big toe, the way we used to as children, and watched the sea come up and take the letters one at a time. The last thing to go was the dots.
I'm not sorry we didn't stand at that altar. I'm sorry I thought the sand would hold still long enough for us to be anything more than we were. Keep the ring, Tom. I'm keeping the sand in my hem. Love, Jo.
