Quote tattooed across fingers

Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are pressed together with the fingers angled upward to form a triangle, against a pale background. The phrase what goes around comes back around is set in plain, evenly weighted capitals running along the fingers, with clean, solid black outlines and no shading. The photograph is in black and white, and the composition is centred on the hands with the lettering clearly readable.

Mrs Penhallow kept the boarding house at the end of Gull Lane, and she kept it the way her mother had, with a pencil behind one ear and no lock on any door. Lodgers who came in November with wet collars and empty purses were given the room over the kitchen, where the chimney breathed warm all night. Nobody asked them for anything. She wrote nothing down, she said, because she had no need to.

A man named Tobias Rudd stayed eleven nights in the spring and left on the twelfth with six silver spoons wrapped in his good shirt. The town knew by noon. The constable came up the cliff path with his hat in his hands and asked whether she meant to make a fuss. She said she would not, and sent him off with a jar of blackcurrant jam for his sister.

Some years on, the sea took the bay's worst winter and threw it at the Tooth rocks. Rudd's boat broke up there in a gale, and he came up the shingle half drowned, holding nothing. Mrs Penhallow was already on the slipway with a blanket and a lantern. She wrapped him, poured hot tea from a flask, and said nothing about spoons. Only when he had stopped shaking did she open her apron pocket and lay the six spoons out on the stones, one by one, each tied with fishing line.

"Kept them safe," she said. "Didn't seem right to melt them down. A thing that goes out of a house has a way of finding its own road home."
