Sit down, the lot of you, and mind the wasps, they've been at the windfalls since dawn and they don't care who they sting. Now. You'll have heard about Aldo Greaves, who wanted to be famous for something. He was going to plant ten thousand trees on the south slope and sell cider to London by the lorryload. His mother watched him pace out the field with a measuring rope and said nothing at all, which was how she said most things.

He went off for three years. Came back in September with a suit gone shiny at the elbows and no money in his pockets. The big orchard had never happened. The rope was still lying in the long grass where he'd dropped it. So he sat on the wall by the gate and wept like a boy, and his mother came out with a knife, a pot of wax and a rootstock she'd been keeping in the shed since spring.

"Small thing," she said. "One branch. Cut it clean, match the green wood, bind it tight, and leave it be." That was all. He spent the whole afternoon on a single bough no thicker than a pencil, and she sat on the step shelling peas and never once looked up. The old woman said that was the orchard's whole secret, and it was the only secret she ever gave him.

Next June the grafted branch bore four apples, and they were the sweetest on the farm. Aldo never planted another row. He nailed a board above the gate in his mother's careful lettering, and it's still there, though the paint's gone soft. Read it on your way out, and mind the wasps.
