R2-D2 and C-3PO thigh tattoos
Traditional · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
Two tattoos sit side by side on the upper thighs: R2-D2 on the left and C-3PO on the right, each with a scrolling banner reading part of a film quote. Bold black outlines define the robots, with blue-grey shading on R2-D2 and warm tan tones on C-3PO, and red roses and yellow sunflowers fill the gaps around the banners. The composition is centred on the two legs, with the tattoos filling most of the frame.

The gaffer's hands were still greasy from the dodgems when Nell found the automaton face down in the mud behind the candyfloss van. Its tin head was dented, one brass eye hanging by a wire. "Leave it," her dad said. "It's been telling folk their fortunes since 1952, and its luck's run out." But Nell had already knelt in the wet grass, wiping the glass with her sleeve.

The machine was called Orrin. A hatch in his chest dropped a card for a penny, and each card said something bold: a sunflower for a long life, a rose for a true love, and a crooked strip of print that read NEVER TELL ME THE ODDS, which was the only one anyone ever asked for twice. Nell spent three nights at the workbench in the caravan, soldering a new speaker from a radio someone had thrown out in Sheffield, while the generator coughed outside and moths knocked against the bulb.
On the last night of the season the fair packed up in a drizzle. Nell wheeled Orrin to the empty car park beside the big wheel and switched him on. The voice came out thin and cracked, reading the card she had written herself. A lad with a torn ticket stopped, hands in his pockets, and asked what the odds were for the ghost train. Orrin whirred, considered him through the mended eye, and said nothing at all. The lad laughed and walked off into the dark.
Nell waited for the wheel's lights to go out one by one, the way they always did. Then the hatch in Orrin's chest clicked and a card slid into the drizzle. It was blank on both sides. She picked it up, folded it twice and kept it in her coat pocket, where it stayed dry.
