Mrs Pender found the robot under bed four on the Tuesday after the gale, wedged behind the radiator where the sea damp had softened the skirting. It was a tin thing no taller than a milk bottle, blue and white, its dome painted over more than once, with a single round eye that still lit when she tilted it towards the window.

She knew whose it was before she knew what it was. The Hallidays had been in number four for a fortnight, the boy with the scabbed knees who would not eat crusts and argued with the gulls on the harbour wall as if they owed him money. He had wound that robot every morning at breakfast and set it marching the length of the table until his mother said enough.

Her husband had always said the boarding house was a ship with the sea on the wrong side. She dusted the robot with the hem of her apron, set it on the sill facing the harbour, and wound its key until the little legs began to tick. The light in its eye blinked twice, as if it were counting the boats coming in.

On Thursday a letter arrived from Leeds in a careful hand. Tobias had cried all the way home on the train, his mother wrote, and could Mrs Pender please keep the robot safe until summer, when they came back for the whole month. Mrs Pender read the line twice, then climbed the stairs and set the robot on the pillow of number four, facing the door, where he would see it first.
