R2-D2 and rebel rose on a thigh
Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows R2-D2 in blue, silver and white, with a turquoise projection beam rising from its head that carries the words "YOU'RE MY ONLY HOPE". Below it sits a large orange rose with a red Rebel Alliance emblem at its centre, framed by green leaves on a red background. Bold black outlines define the forms, and the composition is centred on the thigh with the lettering placed above the droid.

Brother Anselm kept the courier in the cold cloister store, under a tarpaulin that smelt of linseed. It was a squat grey thing with a domed head and one blue panel dented like a tin lid. It had come up the valley road in the back of a carrier's van the winter the bridge washed out. Nobody knew who had built it. Abbot Marrow said it had been sent to find him, and the abbot had been right about worse things.

Every Thursday, when the dark settled over the Dales, the droid woke and threw a pale green light up the wall of the scriptorium. Letters shook into the air, then steadied. They came from Saint Brannoc's, a house across three passes that had gone quiet in the spring. The first message was only a list of flour and lamp oil. The second asked after a novice named Ysolde who had taken her vows in the wrong month. The third, that autumn, was a single line in a hand I knew from my own novitiate: come, if you can, the seal is failing.
I went. I pulled the droid on a handcart over the high road, wrapped in oilcloth, with a red-centred orange rose tucked under its arm that I had cut from the infirmary garden. At Saint Brannoc's the great door hung open. The rose beds had gone to bramble except for one bush, and on it a single bloom was opening through the frost. Ysolde stood beside it with a disc of red wax in her palm. She had kept the seal exactly as the droid had instructed.
She pressed it into my hand and told me the message had never been meant for the abbey. It had been meant for whoever came. The light on the droid's head flickered once, bright and green, and went out for good. The rose kept its colour all the way back down the valley, folded inside my habit against my chest.
