Traditional leg tattoos with roses and animal heads
Traditional · Ankle · Colour · Photo
Two legs rest in a bath of white foam, with traditional style tattoos across the feet, ankles and shins. The designs include blue and red roses, a deer or similar animal head, a wolf or panther head, a small bird and script lettering, with bold black outlines and flat areas of colour. Colour ink dominates the composition, with pink, blue, green and red set against the pale skin and soft, bright background.

Dear Mags,

The big top came down in Shrewsbury on Tuesday, and you should have seen Dad's face when the last of the canvas folded onto the lorry like a sheet off a bed. Ruby the roan mare went to a farm near Ludlow, and the old lion, Constantine, went to a sanctuary in Wales that takes anything with teeth. What's left is me, the two tumblers, Eddie with his knife-throwing, and a trailer full of painted boards that say ROSES AND WOLVES in letters I can barely read now.
Eddie wants one more season on the coast. He says the seaside towns still pay for a dancing bear and a girl who swallows fire, but we haven't had a bear since Easter. Dad keeps the ledger in pencil because the ink ran out in March. I have seen the numbers. They would fit on a beermat with room left for the tip.
Still, last night in the field outside Oswestry, Dad took the old deer-head banner off its pole, the one with the stag in the middle and the wolf snarling at its neck, and laid it across the bonnet of the van. He stood there a long time. He said the colours had gone soft, like the roses on your gran's wallpaper. Then he folded it very carefully, the way you'd fold a flag, and said, "We'll get one more ride out of it."
I think we will too. Write back soon and tell me if the bakery in Ellesmere still does those pink fancies.
Love, Jess
