Rainbow triangle tattoo on the side
Geometric · Ribs · Colour · Photo
A downward-pointing triangle with a bold black outline is filled with vertical bands of red, orange, yellow, green, teal and blue. The yellow band and parts of the green show fine stippled dot texture, while the other bands are solid. The tattoo sits centrally in the frame on pale skin, with dark fabric along the top edge.

Pass me the sieve, love, and mind the vat, it's still warm from the morning. Look at the cloth on the line there. Six bands, hung point-down like a shop sign nobody bothered to paint. My father dyed that for the Sanderson sisters, the year the herring boats came in late and the whole harbour smelt of smoke and wet rope.

The sisters wanted a flag for the lifeboat dinner, and they wanted it hanging from the mast of the Mary Ann, which was a fool's notion, because cloth that points down never lies flat. My father told them so. He told them again when they asked for the yellow to be dotted, pricked through a sieve so it looked like sun on choppy water, and again when the green had to be thinned until it went the colour of a bottle held up to a window.
They paid in coins still warm from a pocket and never came back for the flag. It hung in the loft for thirty years. When the damp finally got into it, the dots were the last thing to go, a little scatter of yellow holding on to the weave long after the red had rotted to pink.
So when the lifeboat men come asking why we keep a pointed rag in the window, I tell them it's for the weather. Cloth that points down knows where the water is. Hold that a minute, will you, and tell me what you see in the blue.
