Overlapping pink, blue and teal triangles
Geometric · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows three triangles overlapping, one pink at the back, one blue-violet in the middle and one teal at the front. Each triangle has a bold black outline with a slightly rough edge. The fills look solid and slightly grainy, with no shading, and the shapes sit on a pale skin background with the design filling most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Hester had drawn the same three triangles so often that her hand moved before her head did. The pink daymark stood on the west mole, the blue on the Ness, and the teal on the breakwater, each a painted board on a stake, and each one a point she could sight from the bridge of any boat that came in past the Gannet Rocks. She set her dividers on the chart and ran the first bearing across the paper, then the second, then the third, and the lines crossed in a small hard shape that she shaded with the soft pencil she kept behind her ear.

The fog came in at four, thick as wet wool, and Captain Renn knocked on the harbour office door with his cap already dripping. The Mary Ellen had lost her bearings past the buoy, he said, and he could not hear the bell. Hester did not ask how a man could lose a bell. She laid the chart flat on the counter and walked him through the three sightings one at a time, the way her father had taught her when she was twelve and the water still frightened her.
The fix put them a cable clear of the Gannet, inside the little triangle where the three lines met. Renn stared at it for a long while. Every wreck on that coast, he said, had been drawn in that same place, the shape where the sightings overlapped and the rocks waited underneath. Hester took the pencil from behind her ear and, without thinking, wrote a single word inside the overlap, as neat as a schoolroom copy: safe.
Outside, the fog thinned into a grey lift. The Mary Ellen sounded her horn once, low and pleased, and then the boat went out on the line Hester had given her, and the pencil mark stayed where she had left it, pale against the sea.
