Rainbow triangle with cartoon eyes on ankle

Ankle · Colour · Photo

A small triangle is filled with bands of rainbow colour, with a cartoon face with two round eyes and a simple smile sitting in the centre. The bold outlines and flat colour fills give it a clean, graphic look, and the tattoo is placed on the outer side of the ankle near the heel. The surrounding skin and a blue fabric cuff and black sandal are neutral in tone, so the coloured ink stands out clearly.

Gather in closer, that's it, mind the tent pegs. No, you can't touch the lamps, they're hot and they're older than your gran. Now sit where the sawdust is dry and I'll tell you about the little triangle in the prism booth, the one with the face.

Every August the Pell brothers hauled their caravans up from the Thames marshes, and every August the prism booth went up last, because Mags Pell would not have it moved before the lamps were lit. Inside there was nothing but a crooked mirror and a tin of paint. The triangle lived on the back wall, no bigger than a playing card, striped red through violet like a sweet in a paper twist. It had two round eyes and a smile that never once changed, not in the rain, not in the fog that rolled off the river in October.

One summer a girl called Ivy Marsh came in out of the heat with a shilling and a grazed shin, and she asked the triangle if her father would be home from the gasworks by Sunday. The triangle said nothing, because it was paint. But when she turned to go, the left eye seemed to be looking at her, and Ivy swore the red band had gone the colour of her mum's hair ribbon.

Years later the Pells sold the rides and the booth went to a scrapyard in Chelmsford. Ivy, grey now and slow on the stairs, went looking for it. The yard man showed her a heap of broken mirror and one small painted square, still grinning. She paid him a florin, put it in her coat pocket, and kept her hand on it all the way home.
