The lift in Harbury House has been broken since March, so you take the stairs to the eleventh floor, and every morning you pass the unicorn on the landing between six and seven. She is not a real unicorn, obviously. She is a sticker-bright pony who lives in 7B with a tortoiseshell cat and a radio that only gets one station, and she carries a banner across her legs like a sash at a county fair.

At the residents' meeting in the community room, Mr Pridmore from 3A unfolds a petition with the words inappropriate for the noticeboard written in biro across the top. You stand up with your flask still in your hand. The pony sits beside you on a plastic chair, her rainbow tail coiled over the back of it, and she says nothing, which is somehow louder than anything you could have said.

The power cuts out halfway through the vote. In the dark the only light is the tail, glowing faintly where it has rubbed against the paint, and somebody's phone torch clicks on. Mr Pridmore is holding the petition up to the light and reading it again, slower this time. Nobody speaks until the pony stands, turns the banner the right way round and asks, in a voice like a schoolteacher's, whether anyone has a pen.

The noticeboard is up by Friday. Beneath the slogan, someone has added in careful capitals: AND THE LIFT TOO. The pony takes no credit for it. She just keeps climbing the stairs, one hoof at a time, the little skull on her rump bobbing ahead of you like a lantern.
