A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You are nineteen days out of Valparaíso when the crate in number two hold starts knocking after dark, a slow tap that the bosun swears is the iron cooling. You know better. You have been slipping her salt pork through the slats since the quay, and she watches you back with one amber eye that catches the lamp every time you lift it.

The mate named her Clever Girl on the third morning, when the hasp was found hanging open and the bird was perched on the rail with her crest up, as if she had been waiting for someone to notice. Nobody had. The cook swore he'd latched it himself. Ever since, she has been the only one aboard who never looks seasick, and the only one who seems to know when the weather is about to turn before the glass does.

The storm comes off the Horn on the twenty-second night, all shriek and green water over the bulwarks. When you go down to check the lashings, the crate is in pieces and she is wedged under the galley stove with her neck coiled tight. She does not bite. She fixes you with that orange stare and turns her head toward the bilge hatch, where the pump has gone quiet. You understand then that she heard it fail a full minute before the engineer shouted, and you are the only one who moves fast enough to listen.

At Liverpool the mate writes the manifest in pencil: one bird, sound, fond of ropes. When the dockers come with their poles, she steps onto your forearm without being asked and digs in just enough to let you know she could have done more. You do not ask where she is going. She keeps her eye on the grey horizon past the cranes, as though she has already counted the days back to the sea.
