Realism portrait of a bearded man with glasses
Realism · Other · Mixed · Photo
The image is a three-panel progression: a line drawing on paper, a purple outline transferred onto skin, and the finished colour tattoo. The finished piece shows a man with short hair, a full beard, round wire-rimmed glasses and one hand raised under his chin, rendered with smooth, detailed shading. The colour is mostly natural skin tones with dark clothing, and the composition is a close crop of the face and hand.

Every night the sketcher at Ashby Road halt drew the last train's passengers while they waited for the lamp to be lit. He used a blue pencil because the company had no ink to spare, and he drew each face in one long unbroken line, the way his grandmother had taught him to draw a river. Nobody thought much of it until the stationmaster's daughter sat for him and he drew her with one hand at her chin, deep in thought, and she stayed in the drawing for three weeks.

The sketcher was poor and proud, and when rain came through the waiting room roof he pinned his pages to the wall to keep them dry. One night a man in round wire spectacles stepped off the late train with no ticket and a leather case of tools. He stood before the wall a long time. Then he asked for a sheet of the blue paper, and he drew the sketcher himself, line by careful line, with his own hand resting under his own chin.
By morning the sketcher had gone, and the paper held only a face that looked tired and kind. The stationmaster said the man in spectacles had walked out along the rails toward the river. The wall was painted over that spring, but the children of the village swore that when the lamp was lit, the drawn face turned its eyes toward the platform clock, as if it were waiting for a train it knew would not come.
The blue pencil was found in the signal box, still warm to the touch, and beside it lay a single stroke of colour, pale as a candle flame, that nobody in the county could match to any paint.
