The snow had shut the pass by the time Mrs Ferrier came into my workshop with her husband's spectacles wrapped in a handkerchief gone grey at the corners. She wanted a new lens, she said, then changed her mind and asked for an eye. I told her a glassmaker does not make eyes for the living. She said the living were not the ones asking.

I had the inn across the road to thank for my lodging that winter, and it was there I carried my tools after dark, a tray of blue enamel wrapped in flannel and my finest brushes. Under a single lamp in the back parlour I built the iris in layers: green at the rim where light would strike it from the window, a dark ring for the pupil, and one small white star placed exactly where a man's gaze catches when he turns from the fire. Mrs Ferrier sat very still while I worked. Beyond the glass the drifts climbed until the lane had vanished altogether.

When I fitted it, she held her husband's spectacles up to the lamp and laughed, a sound like a cup set down too hard. "He never looked at me straight," she said. "Always just past my shoulder, at the door."

I said nothing. The new eye turned towards the door as well, steady and patient, as though it had been made for that and nothing else.
