Realistic blue eye tattoo on the wrist

Realism · Hand · Mixed · Photo

A realistic eye is tattooed on the wrist, with a detailed blue and green iris, dark pupil, reflected highlights and full eyelashes. Above it, black and grey script lettering with shaded outlines runs across the skin, and the skin shows soft shading around the eyelid. The eye fills the centre of the frame against a plain light background, with the hand visible at the bottom edge.

The show had gone south of the river in the wet spring, and by the time it reached the marsh towns there were only nine wagons left and a lion that would not get up. Old Marta kept the ticket box. She had a blue glass eye she took out at night and set on the caravan step so it could watch the road, because her own eyes were tired and the road still needed minding.

Her brother Tobin ran the ring and owed money to everyone in Thorne. Each dawn he went out to count the wagons, and each dawn there was one fewer. The eye on the step never blinked. A crow tried to take it once, and a girl from the village sat beside it until the crow gave up and flew off towards the gasworks.

One morning the eye was gone from the step. Tobin found it in the mud by the water trough, its iris full of sky, the little white window of the caravan shining in the dark centre of it. He said nothing about the debt. He pressed it into Marta's palm and told her the road would be watched now by somebody else.

They packed up the last wagon that week. Marta kept the eye in her apron pocket, and on the long walk home she felt it warm against her hip like a stone left in the sun. For the first time in years she did not look back at the road.
