The rain has been coming sideways over the Tuesday market since Easter, and the straw we lay down at the cheese stall turns to porridge by eleven. You'll laugh, but the dog came back again this morning. Grey-muzzled, one ear folded like a bad page, and that hind foot, the one with the pads worn pale at the edges, pressing a neat print into every bit of mud between the potato sacks and Mr Okafor's eggs. Nobody owns him. Dennis at the flower van says he belonged to a drover who died in March, and I believe him, because the dog sits at the gate of the old cattle pens every afternoon and waits.

Thursday I followed him. I took a cup of tea and a heel of bread, and I stood in the wet behind the tarpaulins while he looked at me as if I were the one who'd come late. He let me kneel. I cupped my palm under that paw, the way you'd hold a hot pie, and the pads were warm and soft, rough at the rims like a well-used boot sole. He pulled free, but only to set his print in the straw beside mine.

I've thought about that since. Every print he leaves gets swept away by the stallholders by dusk, and still he comes back to make another, as though the market is the only place that knows where he's been. Write to me soon and tell me whether Dad's knee is any better. I'll save you the heel of the loaf.
