Realistic eye with a tear on the chest
Realism · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A close crop of a person's neck and upper chest, with pale platinum hair falling over the bare shoulders. Below the collarbones sits a realistic eye, shaded in soft greys, with a single teardrop running down from the lower lid. The plain, light backdrop and soft lighting keep the focus on the tattoo.

Ruth found her first. She still had the same squint she had at fifteen, when they sat at the back of Mr Gilchrist's biology room sharing a sheep's eye pinned to a board. Gilchrist had told them the tear was only a film of salt water that kept the lens clean, nothing to be sentimental about, and Denise had cried anyway, quietly, while Ruth wrote up the diagram in careful pencil.
"You kept it," Ruth said, nodding at the plastic wallet Denise was holding, because the organisers had asked everyone to bring something from school. Inside was the page from that lesson, a grey eye with its single bead of water, shaded with a pencil worn down to the wood.
Denise laughed, and the sound surprised her. "I kept the tear," she said. "Everything else went in the bin." Ruth took the sheet, held it up to the strip lights, and for a while neither of them spoke. Then she folded it along the old crease, handed it back, and said the raffle was about to start, and that she still owed Denise a pound from 1994.
