A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The Mary Ellen came in on the Tuesday tide with half a hold of herring and a red poppy wedged under the wheelhouse hatch, crushed flat but still bright as a signal flag. She pressed it between the pages of the tide ledger, the one where her late husband had written every boat's catch in pencil. The next Tuesday there was another, folded into the bowline of the Ardent. Then one on the grey cork float that had come up in Harold Wray's net, though Harold swore he had never once in forty years brought up anything but cod and rope. The skippers started joking about it at the slipway. Rosa stopped joking when she found one tucked behind the lamp on her own boat's bow.

In March the fleet went out into a sea the colour of slate and only the Kestrel failed to come back. Rosa walked the wall every morning after that, looking east. On the fourth morning she found a poppy lying on the stone where the lifeboat ramp meets the water, dry as paper and still red at the heart. She picked it up, carried it to the shed, and pinned it to the board beside the names. The wind turned round that afternoon and the Kestrel's lights came in with the dusk.
