Red poppy tattoo on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A single poppy flower with five large red petals, each edged in heavy black outline with a thin light highlight. The centre is a dark, dotted disc ringed in orange, with black stamens radiating between the petals. Solid red fills and bold, even linework dominate the composition, which is shown close up on the skin against a pale textured background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Oswin had counted the poppies three times before Compline, and three times the number came out the same: forty-one heads along the south wall, each one swollen and bowed like a hooded bell. The infirmarian wanted them lanced at first light. The sap, dried to a brown crust on the blade, would ease the old men's coughing through the winter, and there was no argument to be had with a man who had walked the cloister with a lantern for thirty years.

Oswin went down the row with his knife in his sleeve. Near the gate the wall held a poppy that had flowered late, a single crimson bloom with five petals that lay open like a dropped glove. Its centre was a dark dotted disc ringed with orange, and the black stamens stood out between the petals as neat as the rulings on a cantor's page. He had stared at it through the morning office without hearing a word of the psalms.

At dusk he took the lantern and went back. He lanced the forty-one, one clean stroke each, and let the milk gather on the blade. Then he left the late bloom alone. He let it stand until the petals fell and the head dried to a grey pepper pot, the way his mother had kept hers on the sill in Cumbria, shaking them for seed.

In spring the seed went out in a folded paper to the sister house at Hexham, with a note asking them to sow it beside the wall. Oswin did not sign it. He only wrote that the poppies came back every year whether anyone asked them to or not.
