Realistic peanut tattoo on lower back

Realism · Back · Colour · Photo

A single peanut is tattooed on the lower back or hip, shown in close view above the waistband of white jeans. The shell has a fine, textured mesh pattern, a soft highlight and a dark cast shadow that gives it a three-dimensional look. Warm brown and tan tones dominate against the surrounding skin, with a faint pale heart-shaped mark visible nearby.

Dig a bit further, Nell said, and don't trust the leaves. You had been on your knees in the bean row for twenty minutes, pulling up stalks that looked promising and came away empty, while she sat on the upturned bucket by the shed with a flask of stewed tea and watched you make a fool of yourself with a good-natured grin.

The peanuts were her idea. Every March she sent away for a paper packet of seed from a man in Kent who wrote his orders in green ink, and every August she announced that this year the soil on the allotment had finally come round to them. They never had. The plants flowered yellow, dropped their pegs into the earth like little pins, and the nuts swelled down there in the dark where nobody could check on them. You had to trust the thing you couldn't see.

Your fingers found the first one under a clump of couch grass. It was heavier than you expected, wrinkled and warm from the ground, its shell netted with fine ridges like the fishing net hung on the back of the shed door. You held it up to the light. Nell laughed so hard she had to put the flask down.

"Roast it," she said. "Then you'll know what it was saying all along." You carried the nut back up the path in your palm, past the rhubarb gone to seed and the wheelbarrow with its one flat tyre, and you did not once look back at the rows you had already emptied, because there was still a whole bed you had not checked, and somewhere under it, the rest were waiting.
