Pizza slice with PIZZA TIME lettering on a calf
Other · Colour · Photo
A pizza slice with red pepperoni, black olives and melting cheese drips, with PIZZA TIME lettering above it and radiating lines. The outlines are bold and the fills are flat orange, yellow and red, with a few black olive shapes. The printed colour drawing of the same design sits in the lower right, on a white surface.

The van gave up on the Culdry road a mile short of the castle, so Ray carried the pizza the rest of the way with the box held out in front of him like a tray of sacred relics. The cheese had started to slide. Behind him the engine ticked and hissed, and a sheep watched him go past with the look of a creature who had seen better deliveries.

Culdry Keep had lost its roof in a storm before anyone living could remember, and the Fenwick sisters had lived in the old gatehouse ever since, with a moat that had grown a duck and a sign on the gate that said NO HAWKERS. Ray did not think he counted as a hawker. He had been bringing their Thursday pizza for six years, always the same: pepperoni, black olives, extra cheese, no nonsense. When he reached the bridge the lantern was already lit and Agnes was waiting with her arms folded.
'Late,' she said. 'Forty-one minutes.' 'The van died.' 'Vans do.' She took the box and lifted the lid, and her face did something Ray had never seen it do in six years. Across the top someone had written PIZZA TIME in capitals, with rays drawn round it like a sunrise, and underneath, in her sister's wobbly hand: Sixty years today, Ray. Our first slice was a Thursday too.
She pushed a slice into his hand before he could argue, still steaming, the pepperoni bright as little red moons. They sat on the wet steps of the keep while the duck paddled round their feet and the olives stared up at the sky. It was not a good pizza, exactly. It was the best one Ray had ever been paid to carry.
