You will not believe what the Gaiety has done to the back stair. Since the new band came up from Leeds, the two grey toms that lived under the bandstand have taken to sitting on the landing above the cloakroom, one face to the room and one turned away as if listening for the door. Mr Hobday says they came with the piano. I say they came with the rain, because they walked in soaked through and nobody has been able to shift them since.

The big one, the one with his jaw open, yowls at the drummer every time he counts in. Honestly Nell, it is the only time the lad gets the tempo right. The other one never makes a sound. He just watches the dancers with those pale eyes, all the way round the floor, like he is taking the measure of each pair for a fitting.

Last Saturday the power went at ten past eleven, right in the middle of the waltz. Everyone stood still in the dark, and the cats were the only ones moving, down the middle of the floor in a line, neither hurrying. When the lamps came back they were sitting on the piano lid, and every couple on the floor was dancing again, a shade slower, as if the cats had set the time.

I have decided not to tell Mr Hobday which of them I think is in charge. Come up on Friday and see for yourself. Bring your good shoes.
