Red and blue paw prints on skin

Mixed · Photo

The image shows a cluster of paw prints tattooed on skin, with a larger pad shape and smaller toe marks in a loose trail. The shapes are solid fills with soft edges rather than fine outlines, and they are coloured in red and blue. The composition is a tight close-up with the prints spread diagonally across the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Rain had been coming sideways into the fish stalls since six, and Mrs Okafor's awning had given up around nine. I was hosing down the slab when I noticed the prints on the wet tarmac by the bins: red ones, then blue, then red again, leading away from the cathedral steps in a line no dog would bother to walk. Each was a neat pad with four little toes, as if someone had pressed a stamp that wasn't quite dry.

I followed them past the flower seller and the man selling phone cases from a shopping trolley. The colours didn't run. That was what got me. Rain should have bled them into pink puddles, but they held their edges, soft in the middle, like paint on warm skin. At the corner by the cheese van the trail doubled back under Dilys's stall, where she sells second-hand records, and a boy was crouched there with a tin of poster paint and a brush, grinning up at me.

"Dog's gone home," he said. "I'm making a proper trail so she can find her way back." He'd been at it since the morning, he said, one print at a time. Red for the front feet, blue for the back, so she'd know which were which. I asked how he knew the difference. He shrugged and said the rain never got them.

We walked the rest together, him stamping, me holding the umbrella over his tin. The last print ended at the bus shelter, a red one and a blue one side by side, and a wet retriever with one ear up sat down squarely on top of them, dripping and pleased, as though she had finally signed for something.
