Matching bow tattoos on two fingers
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are clasped together over a wooden surface scattered with white ribbon. Each hand carries a small black tattoo on a finger, both showing a stylised bow or knot design with simple, bold linework. The shot is softly focused, with a green beaded bracelet on one wrist and the tattoos as the central point of the composition.

The ribbon was white when it came in, which is why Mabel Corrow never trusted it. Every spool that came up the river from the mill at Wenlow had been bleached in the same vat, and every spool ended up on the trestle table in the lane behind the church, where she cut it into lengths for weddings and funerals alike.

Tom Hale came in the wet spring with a pocketful of pennies and a question nobody had asked him before. He wanted a knot that would hold two people without either one pulling. Mabel sat him down, took his hand, and tied a loop of ribbon round his smallest finger. Then she tied the other end round the finger of Ada Penrose, who had followed him in and was pretending to look at buttons.
They say the knot can't be picked loose. Ada tried with a bodkin and her mother's sewing scissors and gave up by teatime. Tom tried to walk off to the cattle fair with it still on and found he had to walk back for her, which was the whole point, Mabel said, and she charged them a shilling for the lesson.
The table is still in the lane and the ribbon in the drawer is still white. Nobody in the village has ever settled which of the two of them was the one who pulled first, and Mabel, when asked, only smiles and cuts another length.
