A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ferry from Vallay came in on the last tide with the mail, a sack of flour and a woman who wanted shoes that could cross the causeway in a gale. Ada Mackinnon had heard that old Tam Gillies on the north shore could make anything from leather, provided you paid him in dried fish and did not mention the price of cod.

Tam measured her foot with a length of string and said nothing for a long while. Then he took down a hide dyed the colour of rowan berries and cut a heel as tall as a man's finger. Across the instep he stitched a bow from a strip of ribbon his wife had left him, folded twice, pulled tight. "They'll carry you wherever you mean to go," he said. "Coming back is another matter. Tie the bow the way you tied it on the way out, or the tide will have an opinion."

Ada wore them to the mainland fair and danced on the quay until the fiddlers gave up. She forgot the time, and the water was over the causeway when she came down to it. Her bow had come loose in the dancing, and the ribbon trailed behind her like a wet thread. She sat on the harbour wall with the sea moving in around her ankles and could not for the life of her remember which loop went first.

Tam found her there at dusk, took the ribbon in his big hands, and tied it the way he tied his nets, one loop over, one under, and pulled. She walked the causeway home with the shoes ringing on the stones, and every step was steady. He kept the offcut from the bow in his pocket for the next pair.
