Red-eyed tree frog design
Colour · Flash
A green tree frog with large red eyes and orange-tipped toes is shown in a clinging pose against a plain white background. The outlines are clean and the body is shaded with soft layered colour, with blue and purple highlights on the limbs and belly. The single figure is centred and fills most of the frame.

The frog came over in a crate of orchids from Costa Rica, or so Mrs Ogle insisted, though nobody at Hollin Lane Glasshouses had ordered a frog. Dorothy Pask found it on the Tuesday morning, clinging to the inside of the potting-shed window with its toes spread like sticky plasters, staring at her as if she were the one who had crossed an ocean.

The council man wanted it gone. He came with a net, a clipboard and a bucket of cold water, and each time he reached for the glass the frog climbed higher, past the trailing vine and the bent watering can, until it sat on the top pane above the fern house where the light came through the colour of weak tea. "It isn't a pest," Dorothy told him. "It's only a long way from home."
She left it be. Through October it ate the midges that rose off the compost heap and grew from a thumbnail to the size of a plum, its eyes going redder as the rain came sideways off the moor. Nobody else could see it from the lane, but the postman always stopped to look up, and a small girl from the cottages waved at the glass every morning on her way to school.
The first hard frost took the dahlias. Dorothy came in one grey dawn and found the top pane bare, the fern house cold, and a single orange toe-print pressed into the frost on the sill, pointing south. She stood a long while with her breath clouding the glass, then went back inside and put the kettle on, and did not look for it again.
