Red heart and black abstract lines on thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A small tattoo on the side of a thigh shows a black, open geometric shape made of thin, somewhat angular lines, with a red heart drawn in a looping, sketchy line beside it. The black linework is fairly crisp, while the red ink is softer and slightly irregular. The skin around the tattoo looks slightly reddened, and the image is framed close to the body with a dark garment edge at the top and a bottle and paper towel at the left edge.

You find the window first, or what is left of it: a lintel and two jambs leaning open to the sky, no glass, the sill furred green with pigeon mess. Nobody has climbed to the east keep since the Hartwell estate sold its lead roof in 1931, and the wind comes through the gap at the top as though it has been waiting for a visitor. Your brother swore the place was haunted. You told him the only ghost up here was the damp.

The paper heart is folded from a page of the parish newsletter, its edges soft from your coat pocket. You thread red wool through a hole punched at the point and walk the line out into the frame, letting the wind lift it in loops. Below, the moat is a flat green eye, and the church clock on the far hill is a grain of rice. Somewhere under you a door bangs twice, then stops.
Gareth comes up the spiral stair an hour later, breathing hard, and stops dead when he sees the heart hanging in the arch like a bell that has forgotten its rope. 'Whose is that?' 'Yours, if you want it.' He doesn't answer. He takes the reel from your hand and lets out wool until the heart is a red full stop against the grey, and for the first time since the funeral you both watch something climb instead of fall.
