Red cross-stitch heart and needle on a wrist
Fine line · Other · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a heart filled with a grid of red cross-stitches, with a red-outlined needle below it, its thread trailing down and a small black stitch mark beneath. The linework is thin and even, with the stitches drawn as crossed red lines and the needle shaded in grey and black. The tattoo is set against pale skin on the inside of a wrist, with a metallic surface visible in the background.

Dear Ilse,

The bulkhead on Deck Nine has finally stopped weeping. You were right to fetch the red thread from the old cargo store, though I told you it was foolish. Nobody sews with colour any more. Grey stock is cheaper, and the seals don't care how they look. But the grey kept pulling through the cold laminate, so on the third night I went back to the spool you found and tried the red.
I stitched a heart over the breach, cross-stitch, the way my grandmother taught me on pillowcases before the reclamation. Each X held. I counted forty-one crosses across the crack, and every one bit into the plate like it meant it. Below the heart I set the needle down on the steel and left the last stitch unfinished, a single black mark where the sealant ran dry, because the inspector wanted the spot logged and I was too tired to argue.
Oyelaran came up from the lower decks at dawn. He reads manifests for pleasure and has never once touched a torch. He pressed his thumb to the heart and said the pattern was not on any spec. I told him the specs were written by people who had never held a breach shut with their own hands. He laughed, signed the form, and asked why a heart belonged on a hull. I said that whoever opens this wall in two hundred years should know someone cared enough about the crew to make the repair pretty.
Tomorrow I'll teach you the crossing. Start bottom left, work up, and never tie off until the thread is spent. The spool is nearly empty, which means it has been used properly. Come find me at the lift and bring your own needle.
