Red heart and paw print on a wrist

Other · Colour · Photo

A single red heart outline encloses a solid paw print with four toe pads and a main pad, all in one flat shade of red ink. The heart's point sits towards the base of the hand, and the design is centred on the inside of the wrist against a pale skin tone. The background shows a blurred tiled surface and a dark sleeve edge, with the photo taken from above at a slight angle.

Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the windfalls, because the wasps are drunk on them this week. Now. You want the story of the dog at Hollins Orchard, and I'll tell it once, so no interrupting with questions about whether dogs can count.

Old Tam Preece had forty trees of Discovery and Bramley down by the river, and a grey collie called Nell who went round the rows every evening before the light went, counting the pickers in and out like a schoolmistress. She never once lost a child. She'd stand at the gate with her head on one side until the last basket was carried through, then she'd lie down in the dust and sigh like a bellows.

The autumn the flood came up the lane, Tam's grandson Eli was still out at the far end, up a ladder with a sack slung over his shoulder. Nell went in after the water. Nobody saw her go. They only found the print of her four pads pressed into the wet clay of the bank, one after another, leading straight to the edge and then turning back, as if she'd thought better of it and gone round for help.

Eli came down the ladder. Tam said afterwards that Nell had done the sensible thing and fetched him, and that was the last round she ever made of the orchard. Each September he pressed a pad of red ink onto the apple crates, a little heart around a paw, for the one who counted us all home.
