Red lotus flower on an ankle
Botanical · Ankle · Colour · Photo
The image shows a red lotus flower tattoo on the outer side of a lower leg, close to the ankle. The petals are drawn with layered, slightly soft red linework and solid red fill, with a small yellowish patch on the central petal. The background is out of focus and shows shelves, a floor and part of another person's legs.

Dear Ada,

The lodger in number seven has asked me again about the lotus seeds. She is leaving on Thursday's coach and wants one for her window box, though I told her nothing grows on Marrow Street but gulls and grievances. Your father's sea chest is still under the stairs, and I found his tin of botanical plates there, the ones he traded off a Dutch captain in '98. Pressed flat between tissue was a red lotus, its petals gone the colour of rust rather than the fire he described.
I took it to the back kitchen and held it against the window. The yellow patch at the heart of the bloom had darkened to the shade of old custard, and I thought of the night he came in from Rotterdam with ink on his fingers, swearing he would paint the thing on the wall of the saloon. He never did. The wallpaper in the front parlour still shows the pale outline where a picture hung for a week before Mother took it down.
So I have decided. The seed head is in a jam jar on the sill, and I have told the lodger she may have the next one that opens, provided she writes to us from wherever she lands. Tell Tom the spare room is aired. Bring the good kettle if you come, and mind the third stair, which still lies about its strength.
Your loving sister, Nell
