Remembrance script quote reading Dad
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A black script tattoo on skin spells out the word Dad followed by a four-line quote about remembering and missing someone. The lettering uses fine, flowing strokes with varied line weight and light shading, set in a centred block on a pale background. The image is monochrome and framed straight on, so the text is clear across the whole piece.

The boarding house at Skerrow Bay kept a slate by the back door where lodgers chalked the tides. Only one word had never been wiped from it. Someone had written Dad across the top in the autumn the herring boats went out, and when the harbour wall cracked in the November wind, Mrs Pell told her grandson the word was enough for some things. The boat did not come back.

Eli was six then. He came down before school each morning and wrote something under the word: a count of gulls, the colour of the sea, once a whole sentence about a crab he had caught in the rockpool. Mrs Pell let him. She never wiped those lines either, so by winter the slate was crowded with small chalk notes, all of them leaning towards the same word like boats towards a light.
The lodgers got used to it. A retired schoolmaster read the notes aloud at breakfast. A girl from Leeds copied one into her notebook and did not say why. Mrs Pell said little, but once, when Eli asked whether he should stop, she shook her head over the sink. Remembering was the easy part, she told him. You did it without trying, at the tap, on the stairs. It was the missing that came and sat down at the table with you.
When Eli was grown, the slate cracked in two during a storm. He set the pieces into the wall beside the new door on the point, and every morning he chalked the tide there, and under it, small, the one word. The gulls watched him do it. The sea came in and went out, as it always had, and the slate held.
