Dear Marnie,

The rain has come sideways across the Corn Exchange all morning, and I have sold three paperbacks, a tea towel and a box of condensed Reader's Digest nobody wanted. My fingers are blue. I am writing this on the back of an invoice because the cardboard on the stall is soaked through.

Then the man in the yellow cagoule. He picked up Hallam's detective novel, the one with the lighthouse on the cover, and turned straight to the last chapter while his coffee steamed on my trestle. I said nothing for a full minute. Then I took a biro from the tin and wrote the word Spoilers, with its exclamation mark, in my best joined-up hand on a scrap of card, and pinned it to the awning. He read it, went red to the ears and bought a bag of pear drops instead.

That might have been the end of it, but the girl who had been saving up for that lighthouse book came back at three, dripping, and asked whether I still had the last page. I didn't, obviously. So I sold her a cookery book with a broken spine instead, and she said she would finish the lighthouse slowly, one chapter a week, and see who was still standing at the end of it.

Don't worry, I didn't tell you how it ends. Write soon and tell me whether Dad has finally bought that hip flask he keeps circling online.
