I have been thinking about the wool you knitted me before I sailed, the one with the open lacework at the cuffs. You said it was to keep the draught off, but I have come to believe it was a kind of net. On the second night out a pale moth came down into the lamp room and got tangled in the mesh of my sleeve, and I sat for an hour not wanting to free it, because it looked so much like the web you hung over my bunk at home to catch the bad dreams. When I finally shook it loose it flew straight at the porthole as if it had been waiting for the glass to open.

The rose you stitched on my cap badge, the little pink one, is still bright. I checked it this morning with the surgeon's glass. Tell your mother I am eating properly and keeping my feet dry, and tell the boy next door that the gulls here are twice the size of his cat. I will write again from port, if they let us land before the hurricane season takes its turn.
