Rose and mandala tattoo design sketch
Botanical · Mixed · Flash
A pencil and ink drawing on a cut-out sheet of paper shows a rose with a leaf sprig above it and a symmetrical mandala-like base of scalloped petals and stippled dots. The linework is grey with light pink shading on the rose petals, and the composition is centred and symmetrical. Two hands hold the paper over a person wearing a sheer top and a black bra strap.

The rose came first, as it always did. Mr Okafor's Albertine had been climbing the south wall of the rectory since before the war, and every June it threw out so many blooms that the bees gave up on the lower branches and went straight for the top. I drew it that spring with a 2B pencil on the back of a seed invoice, sitting on an upturned bucket while Dad argued with the mower.

The scallops underneath were my idea. Mum kept a tin of old buttons and a magnifying glass she used for splinters, and she liked to lay the buttons out in rings across the kitchen table. I copied the rings and then stippled them dot by dot, which took a whole wet weekend and most of my patience. By Sunday night the paper looked like frost on a window, and Dad said it was too fussy for a rose.
He was wrong, though he never admitted it. In August the rose got black spot and Mr Okafor cut it back to bare stumps. I pulled the sheet out of the drawer to remind myself what it had been, and found I had shaded three petals pink with a stub of coloured pencil, the exact colour the bloom had been that first morning. I didn't mean it as a prophecy. I just wanted to keep one version where nothing had gone wrong yet.
The swirl at the bottom is where I tested the nib and forgot to lift my hand. I could have rubbed it out. Instead I left it, and the following June a single shoot had found its way up the wall, pale pink at the tip, curling exactly where I had left the spiral.
