Rose in a glass dome with two silhouettes on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A pink rose with a green stem sits under a glass dome with a dark knob, and two black silhouettes of figures face each other at the bottom of the dome. The outlines are bold and dark, while the glass and background use purple and pink shading with small highlight dots. The composition is centred on the thigh, with the rose rising above the silhouettes inside the dome.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bell jar had cracked twice before Mrs Okafor's rose came in, so Tobias made the third one thicker at the base and told Nell to keep her breath steady. "Glass forgives nothing," he said, turning the pipe slowly above the mouth of the furnace while the orange light crawled up his forearms. Nell watched the bubble swell and sag, purple where the cobalt caught and pink where the rose batch ran thin at the shoulder. She had cut the stem herself that morning from the bush behind the chapel wall, in the rain, with the sexton shouting that it wasn't hers to take.

Mrs Okafor had asked for the shadows as well. Two people, she said, facing each other, though she would not say who they were, and Tobias did not ask. He painted them black with a pitch brush while the glass was still warm enough to take the stain. Nell held the rose steady inside the dome on a fine wire, angling its head toward the taller shape until the petals almost touched the other silhouette's brow.

When the dome was finished and annealed overnight in the cooling oven, Tobias fitted the dark knob on top and carried it out to the cart himself. Nell asked him whether the rose would last.

"Roses don't last under glass," he said. "That's the trick of it. Nothing gets in and nothing gets out, so it only has to last as long as somebody keeps looking." He tapped the wheel with his boot and the cart creaked off up the lane, and Nell stood in the yard until the last of the sun caught the dome and turned it briefly the colour of a bruise going pink at the edges.
