Rose tattoo on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A seated person in a camouflage crop top and grey shorts rests one tattooed arm on their knee, with a large rose on the forearm. The rose is rendered in black and grey with soft shading and fine detail in the petals and leaves. The face is out of frame, and the composition centres on the arm against a pale bed and textured wall.

Nan Hettie kept the rose in the drawer under the proving cloths, where the flour dust settled on it like ash. I found it at ten to four, when the first trays were already sliding into the oven and I was reaching for the salt. It was a single bloom drawn in grey pencil on the back of a delivery docket, the petals curled open so far they had gone soft at the edges, shaded with a thumb until the paper darkened in the hollows.

"Who did that?" I asked. "Your grandad, before he could afford proper paper," she said, and worked the dough with her knuckles as if it had insulted her. "He said a rose wants shadow more than it wants colour. Light only shows you the outside."

We worked without talking after that. The sky over the car park went from ink to the colour of dishwater, then to a thin, watery blue. I shaped rolls until my wrists ached, and Nan took the docket out, smoothed it on the bench and added one more leaf, very lightly, with the side of her pencil. "There," she said. "Now it's finished." It looked no different to me, but she slid it back under the cloths as if it had been earned.

When the shutter went up at six, the queue was already down Tanner Row. The first customer wanted a bloomer, a currant bun and "whatever smells like that". I wrapped the loaf in brown paper and pressed the fold shut the way I'd watched her do a thousand times, and the rose stayed where it was, under the cloths, waiting for someone who needed it.
