Rose tattoo on a forearm in a vintage car
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A person's arm rests out of the side window of a vintage car, with the hand on the white steering wheel and bare feet up on the dashboard area. The rose tattoo on the forearm has bold dark outlines and red and pink shading, with a traditional feel. The composition is a warm, sunlit interior shot with greenery and pink blossom visible through the windscreen.

Nell had the cutting in a jam jar wedged against the dashboard, its roots wrapped in wet newspaper, and she kept checking it the way other people check a sleeping baby. The saloon had been her uncle's and it smelled of pipe smoke and hair oil. On every bend of the Wye valley the jar slid an inch, and she caught it with two fingers without taking her eyes off the lane.

Her uncle had grown the rose against the south wall of a cottage in Tintagel for forty years, a dark red climber he called the Duchess of Ashby out of spite, because his sister said it was too bold for the front garden. When he died, the rose was the only thing left to argue over. Nell won by default. She was driving it to a churchyard in Ludlow, where a woman named Agnes Corrie had asked, in a careful letter, for a single cutting to plant beside her husband's grave.
Near Hay-on-Wye the hedges frothed with pink campion, and the car coughed and died at the top of a hill. She sat with the jar on her knees while a tractor driver called Owen, who said he had never seen a woman push a saloon uphill, towed her to a pump. He asked what was in the jar. She told him the truth: a rose that had outlived its gardener and needed a new wall.
She reached Ludlow at dusk. Agnes came down the path in carpet slippers, took the jar without a word and held it up to the light the way you would hold a letter. "The Duchess," she said. "He always said you'd bring it." Nell had never met the man. She drove home in the dark with the window down, pretending she understood.
