The snow had sealed the lane since Tuesday, so nobody came up the hill to the Coldharbour inn but the post, and the post had stopped too. I had the bar, the spare key and the glass dome on the mantel, which my grandmother swore had belonged to a glazier's widow in Hexham and had never once been lifted without someone crying.

Under it sat a rose she had cut from the garden wall in October and forgotten. It should have browned by December. Instead it kept its colour, deep red going pink at the rim, and every morning a few petals dropped onto the wooden slab like spent coins. I swept them up. I did not throw them out, because my grandmother had told me that was how you knew a thing was still going on.

On the third night a traveller knocked, a man with frost in his eyebrows and a dog that would not stop shaking. He asked for a room and I said the house was full of cold and empty beds, which was true. He looked at the dome a long time and said he had seen one like it in a palace in the south, where the rose was kept alive by a curse and a debt. I told him the only curse here was the damp.

He left before dawn. In the morning the petals were gone from the slab and the rose stood straight, its stem black as a rook's wing, with a dozen beads of water clinging to the inside of the glass like a row of unsaid goodbyes. I wiped them with my sleeve, and they came back by noon.
