Running woman with dotted wind lines on a calf

Fine line · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A woman in mid-stride, with her hair in a ponytail, is drawn in black line with teal top, purple shorts and teal shoes. Dotted lines curl out behind her to suggest wind or motion. The thin, precise linework is combined with soft colour fill, and the figure sits centred on the calf.

Rosalind ran the early round. Every morning at ten to five she took the crates of tin loaves down the hill to the three pubs and the station café, and every morning she came back with a pink flush on her cheeks, laughing at nothing. I used to think she was late for something. It took me until my second winter to understand she was never late, only faster than the dark.

One Thursday she left her teal shoes by the proving cupboard, and when she didn't come in for the rounds I took the crates myself. Halfway down the hill the streetlight outside the chapel clicked off, and the cold lifted off the pavement like a sheet. I kept my head down and ran, badly, the crates knocking against my shins, and the wind came up from the river and tugged at everything, pulling the loose paper from the gutters into long curling streams behind me.

At the station café the man with the moustache looked at the bread, then at me, said nothing, and took two loaves without paying. I walked back up the hill in the first grey light, and at the top I saw Rosalind coming along the wall with her shoes in her hand, grinning, and I think we both knew the morning had reached us by running.
