Double-ended skull and gentleman design
Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows two mirrored halves: a top-hatted gentleman with a bow tie and ornate facial linework, and a skull wearing a similar hat, joined by a central banner with stylised numerals. Fine hatching, stippling and curling flourishes build the shading against a dark, textured background. The design is entirely black ink on white, arranged vertically so it reads the right way up from either end.

Mother Hesketh kept the toll gate at Carrow Ford for forty years, and she had one rule the carters grumbled about: nobody crossed on the side they arrived. You paid your fare, you turned yourself round on the cobbles, and only then did the gate lift. Most took it for a joke until the gentleman in the grey top hat came up the drove road one wet October evening, asking for passage to the far county.

He paid in silver, bright as new pennies, and Mother Hesketh counted it twice. "Turn about," she said. He bowed, lifted his hat, and turned slowly, the way a man turns to read a clock on a wall. When he faced her again the hat sat on a skull grinning under the brim, and the bow at his throat had gone to bone. The carters stepped back into the rain. Mother Hesketh only nodded and raised the gate.
He walked the bridge, and on the far bank he turned once more and was himself again, a little thinner in the cheek. Ask him what he had seen and he would say only that the river looked different from underneath, and that the numbers on the banner over his heart read true from either end, which was more than most men's accounts could claim.
Ada Pim came to the gate the next dusk with her dead brother's coat over one arm and a debt she had no means to pay. Mother Hesketh asked which side she wanted to be on. Ada said she wanted the side where she could see the far county, and the old woman laughed until the chain rattled, took one penny, and turned her round with a hand on each shoulder. On the far bank Ada looked back, and the gate was shut, and the coat was lighter than it had been.
