Script lettering across a finger
Lettering · Hand · Mixed · Photo
A hand held up in a close, dimly lit photograph, showing dark script lettering across the middle finger and a dollar sign on the back of the hand. A shaded rose with red and dark green tones is visible on the forearm, which has further tattoo work at the edge of the frame. The lettering is bold and clean, and the rose uses black outlines with some colour, against a dark maroon background.

Walter Quill had kept the pledge ledger at Gallow and Sons for thirty-one years, and in all that time no customer had ever made him blush. On a wet Thursday in March a woman came in with a gold signet ring she wanted valued against a loan of forty pounds. She laid it on the counter beside a sprig of dark red roses pressed flat between the pages of a seed catalogue.

"It's worth sixty," Walter said. "Thirty, with the stone chipped." She tapped the glass with a nail varnished the colour of a bruise and said nothing. Behind her the radiator knocked twice. Walter wrote the figure in brown ink, looked up, and found her answer waiting in the shape of one gloved finger lifted above the counter, a gesture so plain that Walter, who had been lectured by bishops and bailiffs, felt his pen go still.
He gave her forty. She took the notes without thanks and left the seed catalogue behind. Walter opened it out of habit. Between the pages of hollyhocks and runner beans the rose had left a faint stain, and beside it someone had written in pencil: Keep the forty. Keep the rest. He filed the ticket under bad debts and thought no more about it.
Years later a young man from the bank brought the ledger in for auditing. Every line balanced except one, which had been ruled through in red. Beside it, in the margin, someone had drawn a small rose, and under that, in a hand Walter could not account for, the single word: Settled.
